Hosting means making space available on a constantly working computer connected to the Internet (called a server). For a website to work, it has to be supported by a server. If said computer is not working properly, the website won’t be available. For that reason, it is necessary to choose the hosting offer with particular attention.
The basic services available in a hosting package include FTP accounts and an FTP client associated with them (file manager) that can access them in a Web browser window. The FTP (File Transfer Protocol) service is used to send files over a network. An FTP connection configuration allows to directly connect to the server’s disk drive.
The FTP service management makes it possible to designate a fragment of the rented space and make it available to other users. Configuring and making connections allows to send files from a local disk to a data server. Other basic services in a hosting package include MySQL databases.
A MySQL database makes it possible to launch database applications such as Content Management Systems (CMS) for example. The condition for accessing a database is knowing the following: host, username, access password and database name. These days, it is possible to install most CMS systems from the hosting service management panel.
In most cases, a database required to start a CMS is created automatically upon installation. It significantly cuts down the CMS installation time.
One very important thing to note here. Keep in mind that owning a domain is not in any way related with necessity to choose a particular server. Registering a domain is a certain procedure that means that you are given the exclusive rights to dispose over it individually. Simply put, being its owner is one thing, and keeping it on a server is something completely different.
The domain registration process mostly refers to the ownership right (although it also covers the so-called hosting, or the place where the website’s content is stored). If you’re not decided or informed during the registration procedure on which hosting is the best for you, you may just park the domain and then later fill out the data on the hosting (technical provider).
A domain can be moved around freely between servers of different service providers so that the visitor doesn’t even notice the changes and problems with accessing the resources.
Regardless of the type of hosting, there is always a company offering such services on one end and a recipient on the other. The network services described below are commonly referred to as hosting, although in this case it is not literal hosting, but instead a service focused on specialized applications of Network servers.
