Choosing the right ecommerce platform: Magento vs. Prestashop

When choosing the e-commerce platform that’s right for your company, it’s important to know the best choices on the market today. Here’s a comparison between Magento and Prestashop, two leading open source platform options, to help you make the choice that best meets your needs.

Prestashop is one of the most popular open source shopping cart softwares, first released in 2008, with current headquarters in Miami. It is known as an easy and lightweight software that can be used by anyone, but limited in customizing and compatibility possibilities.

Magento, originally released the same year as Prestashop, is known as the leader in ecommerce solutions, trusted by many large businesses worldwide and owned by eBay since 2011. It is a robust and secure software that is generally used in medium to large sized companies with a greater amount of products, famous for how complete it is and all the possibilities it provides it’s customers with.

Features and customization

Both platforms offer some of the most sought out features in ecommerce today: multistore administration and multilingual sites. However, the Magento platform includes all types of modules, features and extensions, making almost anything possible on websites supported by this software. On the other hand, to make full use and take full advantage of Prestashop, you will have to buy extensions, themes and other add ons. Magento is the best choice if you’re looking to fully customize your site and personalize it, adapting it to your companies image and culture. Prestashop, on the other hand, is a good option if you’re not looking to make a simpler site, adding, for a price, only the features you’re really interested in.

Installation and use

Prestashop is easier to install and use, but this is due, mostly, to it’s simplicity and limited possibilities.

Magento requires experienced and capacitated people to take advantage of its full capabilities, but this requirement comes with unlimited options in it’s use. Prestashop also requires less time to develop, since it is a simpler platform.

System requirements

Magento has more system requirements, consuming more server processes, due to its stableness and amount of native features we mentioned earlier. It has the capability to process a large number of visitors and sales simultaneously with minimum risk of error, while Prestashop is a good option for those with smaller online traffic. Although Prestashop consumes less server processes than Magento when the site has significant activity or purchases, this benefit comes with a risk. Since it isn’t as stable and secure as Magento, problems such as sale mix-ups and order process errors are more likely to happen.

Integration and compatibility

The Magento Core API gives you the ability to easily integrate your management software to your store. Also you can find many extensions for the most used ERPs and CRMs, some of them free for download in the marketplace.

Mobile friendly

Both Magento and Prestashop stores can be adapted to tablets and cellphones, depending on the theme used for the store. There are responsive themes available for both platforms, though the offer is larger for Magento software. On top of this, Magento offers an app that allows business owners to manage their online stores from their cell phones or tablet.

Support and community

Prestashop wins this one. For a price, they offer different options of official technical support. There is also a pretty big community of customers that offer support and advice through different forums, blogs, etc. For Magento, however, you can also find support from the community, which is larger than Prestashop’s.

SEO architecture

Magento has more options for SEO (Search Engine Optimization). This is key in the success of your online business, since having this optimization means more access to your site, and more access means more sales.

Marketing and sales

Magento and Prestashop offer almost all the same marketing and sales options, such as creating customer groups and discount coupons, for example, but Prestashop’s options are more basic and less flexible. If you’re interested in bigger and more targeted sales and marketing actions, Magento is the best choice.

Prestashop is the cheapest choice. Magento’s prices are more elevated due to it’s system requirements and the need for experienced developers who can manage the platforms complexity.

Prestashop is a reliable and easy to use ecommerce option for those who are either on a tighter budget or only interested in having a simple, generic store. Magento, on the other hand, chosen and trusted by some of the largest companies worldwide, is better for those who are looking for a solid, fully customizable and trustworthy site. Prestashop comes with many benefits, like being a low cost and little time consuming platform, but these benefits come with a price, such as less SEO options, features and overall stability.

Good comparison of both. I have used both Magento
    and PrestaShop
and want to give here my own opinion. The thing which I like most in PrestaShop
is its support community; you can even get help from there in minutes as
compared to Magento. While the Plus point of Magento is its lot of
    customization features.
